A national disaster life support (NDLS) training base, the first of its kind in China, was recently inaugurated at Shanghai University of Medicine & Health Sciences in the city's Zhangjiang area.

The base is aimed at nurturing more professionals involved in disaster first aid and life support, improving the efficiency of disaster first aid, increasing the survival rate of victims involved in disasters, and providing victims with better medical services.

The base was inspired by the NDLS courses designed by the US National Disaster Life Support Foundation, an organization that start in 1999 to promote education and research in the areas of emergency medical services and disaster response. The courses are divided across three main categories; disaster first aid core courses, primary life support courses, and advanced life support courses.

Currently, more than 120,000 people all over the world, including doctors, nurses, emergency services personnel, and firefighters have received courses designed by NDLS.

Last June, the courses were brought to China for the first time and two teachers from Shanghai University of Medicine & Health Sciences attended the training program.

Hu Yanqi, one of the attendees, said the training, which spanned three days, involved learning about disaster relief emergency services, triage, CBR decontamination, and emergency drills.

Huang Gang, president of the Shanghai University of Medicine & Health Sciences, said the university has a responsibility to nurture a large number of first aid professionals who are able to respond to large disasters with professionalism and efficiency.

Huang said all the teachers and students majoring in first aid will take NDLS courses and the base will also provide training services to doctors at the hospital affiliated with the university.
