The 2022 Zhangjiang Life Science International Innovation Summit was held in Zhangjiang Science City in Shanghai's Pudong New Area on Nov 18, and attendees discussed the development of Zhangjiang's medical device industry.

Zhangjiang started to develop the medical device industry in 1996, and in the same year, Medtronic, a healthcare technology company, established its first cardiac pacemaker production line in Zhangjiang. Two years later, Chinese medical devices manufacturer MicroPort Scientific Corporation was established in the city, and since then, the medical device industry in Zhangjiang has been booming.

After more than 20 years of development, Zhangjiang has developed a complete industrial chain for the medical device industry, and a number of industry leaders have set up their branches in Zhangjiang, such as MicroPort, iRay Group and Liferiver, and all of them have injected a strong impetus into Zhangjiang's biomedicine sector.

The Medical Device Industrial Base, which was approved to be constructed in the science city in 2019, covers a total area of 4.23 square kilometers, and focuses on developing high-end medical imaging equipment, in-vitro diagnoses, implant interventional apparatuses, and intelligent rehabilitation.

Official data indicates that the base is currently home to 60 medical device manufactures, and as of September, a total of 11 enterprises in the base had gone public.

According to the development plan, by 2025, the medical device industry output value in the base is expected to reach 30 billion yuan ($4.2 billion), and a leading industrial cluster with international influence is planned to be built in the base.
