Gu Jieting, a well-known Chinese pianist, collaborated with Lv Jia, performer of female leads in operas, in staging a performance named "Rencontre between Debussy and Du Li Niang" at the Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum from Jan 26 to 28.

The stage was transformed from an old art exhibition hall into the spectacular venue seen for the show, and the performance style was a combination of western music and oriental theatre.

The museum was founded in 2014, and since then plenty of performances have been staged there, which are also attempts to discover new art styles. This performance acted as another discovery in the art of voice and music.

Gu Jieting played the French pianist - Debussy, who is one of the most prominent figures associated with impressionist music, while Lu Jia played the character of Du Li'niang, a fictional character from Tang Xianzu's play The Peony Pavilion. The two characters, one being a western figure and the other holding a more traditional Chinese image, gave the audience a sense of stark contrast, and managed to highlight the beauty of both cultures on one stage.
