Athletes from Yantai, East China's Shandong province, brought home six gold, two silver, and six bronze medals from the 19th Asian Games. This is the second biggest medal haul out of all cities in the province.
The number of gold medals won in this edition was the same as the last Asian Games. Two Yantai-born athletes who competed for other provinces and cities won three gold medals.
Discus thrower Feng Bin broke the course record with a distance of 67.93 meters. Athletes from Yantai also won medals in sports they are traditionally strong in, including swimming, athletics, and basketball. The athletes also achieved a breakthrough in the number of gold medals won in rowing, swimming, and diving.
Shandong sent 93 athletes to the Games to compete in 25 events. Among them were Olympic gold medalists Liu Shiying and Sun Yiwen, as well as world champions Feng Bin and Liang Yushuai.
The majority of Yantai athletes competing in this edition of the Games will take part in next year's Paris Olympic Games.
The 19th Asian Games closed on Oct 8. The Chinese delegation finished top of the table with 383 medals, including 201 gold.
