In recent years, Yantai in Shandong province has made great strides in deepening supply-side structural reform and exploring the path of high-quality development of its agricultural industry.

In 2022, the city's total output value of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, and fishery reached 125.15 billion yuan ($18.19 billion), a year-on-year increase of 5.6 percent, ranking first in Shandong in terms of scale.

Ensuring a stable and safe supply of food and agricultural products has always been a top priority for Yantai.  

The city has built 183,000 mu (12,206 hectares) of high-standard farmland, as well as completed the rectification and transformation of 48,700 mu in abandoned land to ensure high grain yields.

Yantai has made remarkable efforts in preventing and controlling plant diseases and insect pests. In addition, the area of stripe rust in the city accounts for about 0.037 percent of the province's total. In 2022, the grain production area of Yantai hit 4.55 million mu and the grain output totaled about 1.85 million tons, exceeding the provincial target.

The city has boosted the high-quality development of the fruit industry, renovated 1.32 million mu of old and inferior apple orchards, as well as 8,500 mu of pear orchards. It has also built 13 modern orchards. In 2022, the city's fruit output reached 7.72 million tons, including 6.32 million tons of apples and 600,000 tons of annual exports of apples, accounting for more than half of the country's total.

Yantai has established a modern animal husbandry industrial system. In 2022, the city's total output of meat, eggs, and milk reached more than 1.51 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 2.01 percent.  

Deep-sea farming is also taking shape in Yantai with the world's first deep-sea intelligent unmanned fishery farming vessel Marine Granary No 1. There are 46 marine ranch demonstration areas above provincial level in the city.

The key to agricultural modernization lies in scientific and technological progress and innovation. Yantai has accelerated the construction of a modern seed industrial system, established 10 breeding teams for the whole "government, learning, research, enterprise, and promotion" chain, as well as cultivated three new varieties.

The city has nurtured 18 provincial-level leading enterprises and 57 city-level enterprises. It is home to 146 enterprises with an annual sales income of more than 100 million yuan.
