The Huang-Bohai New Area in Yantai, a coastal city in East China's Shandong province, was honored as a permanent site for a China-South Korea joint proliferation and release activity, which will further promote the high-quality development of the city's marine and fishery industry.
Yantai has a 1,071.19-kilometer long coastline, nearly 230 offshore islands, and seven natural harbors, bringing the city a wide range of marine resources, and making it an important fishing base in China. In recent years, the city has made protecting the marine ecology and environment and promoting the development of a superior maritime economy a top priority.
According to official data, Yantai has invested a total of 250 million yuan ($35.82 million) of financial funds to restore fishery resources and promote the high-quality development of the marine ecological industry.
Thanks to the local government's efforts, the city's gross output value by fisheries amounted to 111.25 billion yuan in 2021, and the output of aquatic products last year exceeded 1,8 million metric tons. The per capita annual income of the city's ocean fishermen and women in 2021 reached 34,000 yuan.
The fish release activity between China and South Korea started in 2018, and since 2021, the annual activity has been held at the Huang-Bohai New Area, which has deepened cooperation between Yantai and South Korea in the marine fishery industry. It was also an important measure to promote the development of the marine fishery economy and to protect living aquatic resources.
