The Huang-Bohai New Area in the coastal city of Yantai, Shandong province has remained committed to achieving sustainable development by accelerating the implementation of the dual carbon goals in an all-round way.
Since China announced in 2020 the goals of striving to peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, Huang-Bohai New Area has utilized its strength with pro-ecology and low-carbon efforts to fast-track the pursuit of its carbon goals.
The new area has focused on setting up a comprehensive industrial layout and achieving dual carbon goals since its establishment in December 2021. It has made continuous efforts to promote green and low-carbon ways of manufacturing and living, aiming to build itself into an ecological "green lung" for the Bohai and Huanghai seas.
Currently, the new area has been focusing on promoting the construction of a world-class green low-carbon cycle demonstration area, adhering to a new development philosophy, and fostering high-end industries, aiming to stimulate vitality locally and promote the endogenous power of local economic development.
Yantai Huang-Bohai New Area boasts abundant ocean resources, and it has cooperated with Shandong Marine Resources and Environment Research Institute to launch a new development model for enhancing the capacity for carbon absorption in the ocean and build a new model for marine economic development.
Efforts have also been made to cultivate a number of outstanding small- and medium-sized enterprises. The area has spent 200 billion yuan ($28 billion) to promote the construction of 20 characteristic industrial parks, which are estimated to bring a total output value of about 400 billion yuan after being put into operation. These industrial parks cover strategic emerging industries such as biomedicine, new optoelectronics, new generation information technology, high-end equipment and new materials, and are designed to promote the city's green, low-carbon and high-quality development.
Huang-Bohai New Area is committed to building itself into a highly desirable living area and has devoted a lot of effort to transforming more public places into green spaces. Currently, it has 3,036 hectares of green land areas, and a number of greenways and leisure parks have been built, providing the general public with an ideal location for leisure and sightseeing.
