In the golden autumn weather, farmers in Xiaojiakuang village in Qixia, a county-level city in Yantai, which is located in East China's Shandong province, are enjoying a bumper harvest of apples.
Xiaojiakuang village is dubbed as the "Apple Village" and has a long history of planting apples. The village was included on the national "One village, one product" demonstration village list last year, becoming the only demonstration village for the apple industry in Shandong.
The village is surrounded by mountains and the temperature varies widely from day to night, which is an ideal environment for growing apples. Xiaojiakuang was once a poor mountain village due to its harsh farming conditions and remote location, and apples produced here didn't bring prosperity to local farmers.
However, the village set up an agricultural cooperative and registered a trademark for its apples, aiming to promote the product's popularity among wholesalers and consumers. In 2018, apples from Xiaojiakuang village were approved by the China Green Food Association, and the fruit received the honorable title of "Chinese Green Food Product".
"The apples are of good quality and high quantity this year, and we are sure to have a bumper harvest, which will definitely help boost local farmers' incomes," according to Wang Pengji, Party chief of Xiaojiakuang village.
