Shandong government released a legislation to help protect the ecological environment in Changdao county in Yantai on July 26, making it first of its kind in Shandong province.
Regulations on Changdao Marine Ecological Protection rolled out a raft of measures in terms of ecological restoration and cultivation, pollution treatment and regional function planning.
According to the law, activities that destroy marine ecology should be prohibited and existing projects that do not meet the planning requirements should be closed or moved out. The regulation will be taken into effect on Oct 1.
As the only island county in Shandong province, Changdao enjoys unique geographical advantages, rich marine resources and profound culture, but its ecosystem is relatively vulnerable. The regulation is of great significance to protect its ecological marine environment.
Changdao county, located at the north end of China's Shandong province, enjoys an abundance of wildlife. Marine species like barracudas can also be seen swimming in the nearby sea areas, while sharp-eyed visitors can track signs of coastal erosion in the rocky outcrops.
It has 32 picturesque islands each with their own unique features, which attract a large number of tourists every summer. For seafood lovers, the island is home to Chinese abalone, scallops and seaweed.
