Qingdao WCNA launches innovative LNG cold energy utilization project

chinadaily.com.cn| Updated: June 5, 2026

Shandong province has launched its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) cold energy cascading utilization project in the Qingdao West Coast New Area. As a leader in the industry, this initiative marks the first domestic integration of cold energy power generation and central air conditioning within an LNG receiving terminal.

By using advanced technologies, including cryogenic Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) processes and efficient intermediate-media heat exchange, the project captures the thermal energy released during the LNG regasification process — traditionally a wasted byproduct. This approach allows for the resource-efficient and large-scale use of cold energy across different temperature ranges.

The facility is expected to generate 26 million kWh of electricity annually while supplying cooling for industrial buildings, saving an additional 8 million kWh in air conditioning power.

This project provides a scalable Chinese solution for green development, reducing carbon emissions by nearly 20,000 metric tons annually and raising the bar for the low-carbon transformation of natural gas storage and transport infrastructure.
