Shinan district of Qingdao in East China's Shandong province has been updating its urban construction to stimulate economic development in recent years.
Expansion and upgrading of traditional commercial areas
The location of the district, with its proximity to the sea, provides a natural advantage for urban construction.
Notably, the Fushan Bay commercial area, which is located along the coast, has seen the emergence of 465 stores, including an Ole supermarket and a Fangsuo bookstore.
"The purchasing power of the Qingdao market has exceeded our expectations, and this is closely related to the location of our bookstore," said Sun Dejun, the manager of the Tsutaya bookstore in the Fushan Bay commercial area.
Renewal of historical and cultural blocks
Sifang Road Block has become a vibrant youth community, blending pub, tea and coffee culture and where the modern coexists harmoniously with the traditional brands.
Sanjiangli, another landmark historical block in Shinan, has introduced "youth industries" such as baking, snacks and handicrafts, promoting traditional culture with a modern twist.
Upgrading and transforming old buildings
Shinan district was recently recognized as one of the "Top 30 Benchmark Districts for China's Building Economy (Headquarters Economy)" at the 2023 China International Fair for Trade in Services in Beijing.
High-rise buildings serve as key drivers of economic development in Shinan and are integral to urban renewal and construction efforts.
Over the past three years, 35 old buildings covering a total area of 950,000 square meters have been renovated, revitalizing over 500,000 sq m of unused space. This has breathed new life into numerous old buildings and idle factories.
