Qingdao, a coastal city in East China, is experiencing a revival of its old city culture. Two local cultural institutions, Qingdao Quyi Society and Qingdao Artistic Crafts Company, are leading the way in entertaining new audiences with traditional art forms.
Qingdao Quyi Society, a private folk-art group specializing in xiangsheng (crosstalk), has been active for 12 years and has performed more than 3,000 times. To celebrate its anniversary, the group is hosting a traditional xiangsheng festival and a national tour. It is also partnering with Liaoning University of Science and Technology to launch a training program for aspiring artists.

The society has attracted a younger audience through social media and word of mouth. "Many young people make Qingdao Quyi Society a must-visit stop during their trips to Qingdao," said Zhu Qi, one of the founders of the society.
Qingdao Artistic Crafts Company, a 60-year-old local brand, has also benefited from the city's cultural revival. The company has launched a series of exhibitions and events to promote traditional arts and crafts, including high-quality jewelry, handicrafts, and antique appraisals.
The revival of the old downtown area in Qingdao reflects the city's efforts to preserve its history while embracing modernization. "The key to urban renewal is to awaken the emotions of the original residents and respect individuality and diversity," said an industry insider, and the new wave of audiences is a testament to the success of this approach.
