Fushan Road in Qingdao's Shinan district is home to rows of historical buildings, including former residences of many historical celebrities.
At No 36 Fushan Road stands a three-story structure that was built in the 1950s. The eastern apartment on the first floor is the former residence of Mao Hanli (1919-1988), a renowned Chinese marine physicist and scientific translator.
In August 1954, Mao returned from the United States and started to work at the Qingdao marine biology research laboratory – the predecessor of the current Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Oceanology.
During his stay in Qingdao, Mao took part in a series of significant research activities throughout the history of China's marine science endeavors and contributed a lot to the formation and development of China's marine physics and international marine academic exchanges.
Mao's former 102-square-meter apartment has been preserved well and is rated as an immovable cultural relic.
