Ninth Chinese medical team to Papua New Guinea performs new-technique minimally invasive urinary surgery

Updated:2018-08-31

After arrival in Papua New Guinea (PNG), two urologists, He Weiyang and Pu Xiaofeng of the ninth Chinese medical team, have conducted extensive communication and research with local urologists at the Port Moresby General Hospital in order to prepare for a new-technique in minimally invasive urinary surgery.

On the one hand, the team researched common urinary diseases and frequently occurring diseases (such as severe benign prostatic hyperplasia, urethral stricture and urinary calculi) in the PNG, worked closely with local staff on clinical diagnosis and making the rounds at the Port Moresby General Hospital. They helped the hospital establish standard diagnosis and treatment procedures for common urinary diseases, assisted in setting up policy and procedures on the perioperative period, and standardized overall systematic management of the urinary surgery department.

On the other hand, the medical team performed minimally invasive urinary surgeries at local hospitals and offered training on key surgical techniques. After completing registration for China-donated medical devices and supplies, such as an ion-cutting system and fiberoptic ureteroscope, He Weiyang and Pu Xiaofeng immediately exchanged views with local doctors, set up patient appointments, and launched before-surgery assessments and treatment planning.

With the help of thorough planning and undivided collaboration from team members anesthesiologist Huang Hougang and nursing specialist Xie Zhaorong, the team has overcome less-than-satisfactory medical conditions at the visiting hospital, and performed PNG's first ionic prostatectomy on a severe benign prostatic hyperplasia patient. They are also responsible for PNG's first ureteroscopic pneumatic lithotripsy for upper ureteral calculi, and first double "J" catheterization for difficult ureteroscopic pneumatic lithotripsy. These minimally invasive urinary surgeries have been successful with all three patients discharged from hospital within 2 to 3 days. Local doctors, patients and family members spoke highly of the Chinese medical staff.
