Since the beginning of this year, the village has increased the pace of reform to its agricultural structure and focused on developing a glutinous rice industry.

The new industry will be based on a local company working in partnership with a local cooperative and individual farmer. The cooperative will make a transfer of land rights at a price of 1,000 yuan ($157.9) per mu (0.07 hectares). At present land measuring 300 mus has been made available for the new scheme.

"There are 128 low-income households in the village. We hope we can lift them out of poverty," said Huang Shenghui, a manager of the cooperative in Yanyu village.

The village has a total of 656 households, and the rice the area grows is famous across the country.

Local farmers in the area are able to take advantage of plentiful water and fertile soil to grow the rice, and in the future the village plans to build a demonstration zone and promote the growing of the rice across the county.

Glutinous rice remains a popular food in Zhenfeng county, a tradition that dates back to ancient times.
