Xingren county, named "the hometown of coix seeds" by National Association of Grain Sector 2012, has become the biggest production base of coix seeds in China, even in Southeast Asia.
It has formed an industry chain that has lifted 23,000 people out of poverty. There are 385 companies producing and processing coix seeds in Xingren, with an annual production value of more than two billion yuan ($316.4 million).
Every year it produces around 200,000 tons of coix seeds, which is sold in the domestic market and exported to countries like Britain, South Korea, Japan, and Malaysia. Xingren county has gradually become the price-setter in coix seed market.
According to local statistics, by the end of 2017, Qianxinan prefecture had 620,000 mu (41,333.33 hectares) of quality fruits, 1.35 million mu of vegetables, 680,000 mu of coix seeds, and 1.85 million mu of high-grade tea and nuts. What's more, it actively seeks adjustment of industrial structure and development of the breeding and processing industry for agricultural products in the light of local conditions.
