Little red 'lanterns' adorn Xingyi

Updated: 2017-09-04

Koelreuteria are blooming in the urban areas of Xingyi as autumn sweeps the Qianxinan Bouyei and Miao autonomous prefecture.

The plant's yellow and red flowers bloom every year from August to October, bearing red lantern-shaped fruits. The annual sight has given rise to the local nickname "lantern tree".

Apart from the beautiful blossoms, koelreuteria leaves function as a natural air purifier to disinfect the environment, reducing smoke and dust.

The plant was introduced to Xingyi hundreds of years ago and continues to thrive in almost all the towns and villages of the city.

The local government has recently improved the infrastructure of Xingyi's Chuanyundong Park to provide more places for residents to take a stroll and appreciate the blossoms.
