A summer camp for impoverished children in the Qianxinan Bouyei and Miao autonomous prefecture opened at Chongwen Middle School in Xingyi on Aug 2. 

Organized by the local public security bureau, the summer camp seeks to help the children protect themselves and broaden their horizons through offering them trainings and more books.

A total of 120 children between the ages of nine and 14 took part in the activity. The children were all from poor families verified by the public security bureaus across the prefecture. 

The four-day activity offered different group activities, including training in firefighting and self-defense, lectures on traffic security, psychological counseling and watching inspirational movies together. 

A publisher affiliated with the public security bureau donated more than 1,000 books to the children at the opening ceremony of the summer camp.
