Updated: 2017-06-13
Intangible cultural heritages from Qianxinan Bouyei and Miao autonomous prefecture in Guizhou province, impressed the audience at a fashion show held in Beijing on June 8.
A mix of tradition and current fashion, the show exhibited dresses featuring embroidered cloth from Qianxinan, at the Gongwangfu Museum (Prince Gong's Mansion), the largest and best-preserved Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) princely mansion in Beijing.

A Ganbiao choir, another of Guizhou's provincial intangible cultural heritages, performed as an accompaniment.
The show's design team traveled deep into remote villages in Qianxinan to learn from local embroiders as well as ancient dyeing techniques.
"The cooperation between traditional handicraft and modern fashion help dig out the aesthetic values and cultural connotation and increase the popularity of traditional handicraft as well," said Yu Dan, a renowned Chinese scholar.

The Beijing-based garment company Eve Group curated the fashion show and established a texture database to integrate culture from different ethnicities with modern business.
"The database has attracted many designers and will have the ancient delicate texture applied in modern life," said Xia Hua, president of Eve Group.

Their efforts also found a new method to help relieve poverty in the mountainous region. The group has created more than 3,000 jobs for the embroiderers in remote villages.
Additionally, Gongwangfu Museum has organized another six similar shows to display Suzhou embroidery, Cantonese embroidery, Song Dynasty brocade, Nanjing brocade weaving techniques, Suzhou silk and yarn dyeing techniques.
