Luohan town battles poverty with agriculture
Updated: 2017-03-16
Luohan town in the Qianxinan Bouyei and Miao autonomous prefecture of Guizhou province, has recently focused four agricultural industries to target poverty alleviation.
The tea industry, a pillar industry of Luohan town, has promoted impoverished farmers to establish tea plantation bases with the help of preferential policies, abundant investment and technical guidance.
Guizhou’s highly significant pepper industry is also promoting plantation establishments with the help of farmer cooperatives. Pepper plantations are predicted to expand 333,333 square meters this year.
The local government is also actively promoting the cultivation of canna edulis ker, a starchy root which grows especially well in hilly areas. Canna edulis ker plantations are planned to generate over one million yuan ($145,085) worth of profits this year, offering impoverished farmers an increased income of 1,200 yuan per capita.
Cooperating with enterprises, impoverished farmers have also been encouraged to engage in the flue-cured tobacco industry. The flue-cured tobacco plantations will extend an additional 7.3 square kilometers by the end of 2017.
