History reborn at Zhenfeng Bouyei Ancient Town

By Yang Fan (chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2016-10-19

The Zhenfeng Bouyei Ancient Town is a cultural symbol of the county. The town dates back to 1727 when it was founded by the Bouyei ethnic group. In 1742, the town was rebuilt in stone, similar to the characteristic buildings of the time, including temples, guild halls and academies.

Today, the majority of the town remains in good condition, however some of the buildings have become dilapidated. To restore the town to its full former glory the Zhenfeng government launched a major renovation project in 2015.

The 3.7 billion yuan ($549.08 million) project, which is scheduled for completion in 2017, will contribute towards the building of commercial district and the renovation of historic buildings and the cultural street.

Modern infrastructures such as a parking lot and leisure square will also be built for the convenience of visitors to the ancient town.

Renovations on the cultural street finished on Sept 30 earlier this year, and is currently a fine example of Bouyei culture during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing dynasties.

The Bouyei are one of the oldest peoples of China, and have had a settlement in Zhenfeng county, Guizhou province for more than 2,000 years.
