A case from Ordos city has been highlighted in a report released under the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United States (FAO)'s "China's Digital Transformation and Sustainable Development of Food Systems" project, jointly organized by the FAO's China office and Zhejiang University.
The report, titled Agricultural Sustainable Development under the Dual Carbon Goals, reviews exemplary practices in livestock, rice, rubber, and tropical fruit production. Ordos' "photovoltaic + desert control + livestock" model was selected as a typical case of sustainable livestock development, showcasing China's progress in green, circular agriculture.
The report notes that as demand for meat grows, balancing livestock development with ecological protection is vital. Ordos has utilized its local farming conditions to integrate renewable energy, desert forage cultivation, and eco-friendly sheep farming, creating a model characterized by efficient land use, industrial symbiosis, and multiple benefits.
This integrated approach closes the loop across forage planting, livestock farming, manure recycling, and solar power generation, delivering ecological, economic, and social gains while promoting a sustainable and circular agricultural livestock system.
