China's newest carrier rocket, the Long March 12, was launched at 10:25 pm on Nov 30. This marked a significant milestone as the first use of coal-based rocket fuel, which was produced in Ordos city.

The fuel was developed collaboratively by the 165th Institute of the Xi'an Aerospace Propulsion Testing Technology Institute, China Shenhua Coal To Liquid and Chemical Co's Ordos branch, and other related entities.

The coal-based aerospace kerosene used in this mission is primarily derived from direct coal liquefaction oil produced by the National Energy Group. Utilizing coal resources significantly reduces China's long-standing reliance on traditional petroleum in the aerospace sector.

Coal-based kerosene exhibits similar performance characteristics to petroleum-based kerosene, including specific impulse, cooling properties, flow resistance, and combustion traits. It also has stable performance.

Its first application in the Long March rocket series represents a groundbreaking milestone in the expanded use of coal-based specialty fuels.

In recent years, Ordos has advanced the upgrade and demonstration of coal-to-liquid projects, supported the national supply of coal-based aerospace kerosene, and contributed to the development of the country's aerospace industry.

The application of coal-based aerospace kerosene provides a new fuel option for space missions and opens up further development opportunities for Ordos' coal-to-liquid industry, adding a significant chapter to the city's coal narrative.
