The city of Ordos in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region will organize a cultural activity for foreigners in the city's Ejin Horoo Banner on Feb 14.

Feb 14 is not only Valentine's Day, it's also the eve of the traditional Lantern Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar.

During Lantern Festival, foreigners living, studying and working in Ordos will be invited to participate in a series of traditional activities in a bid to boost cultural exchange and teach them more about Ordos and China.

Activities during the day will include watching a performance staged by the Ulan Muqir art troupe as well as yangko, a type of Chinese folk dance, and guessing lantern riddles.

Others will be eating yuanxiao, boiled glutinous rice flour balls typically consumed at the end of the Lunar New Year holiday, and visiting lanterns.

Lantern Festival is the first full moon of the new year.

The evening often involves a grand fair with lantern displays, a tradition that can be traced back to the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 24).

At the celebration, lanterns of all shapes, sizes, and colors light up the streets, and children show off their lanterns on strolls, adding to the bright lights that mark a luminous end to new year revelry.
