Ordos consumer market rebounds

Total retail sales of consumer goods in the city of Ordos – located in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region – last year hit 60.83 billion yuan ($9.13 billion), up 7.6 percent year-on-year and ranking it first in the region in terms of its growth rate.

Highlights of the consumer market in Ordos are as follows:

New energy vehicles sales grow rapidly

From January to December 2021, sales of cars above a designated size hit 6.28 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 10 percent.

Of these, sales of new energy vehicles surged by 337.9 percent year-on-year.

Consumption surges

In 2021, retail sales of smart household appliances, gold and silver jewelry, medicine, as well as books, newspapers and magazines increased by 58 percent, 36.9 percent, 64.5 percent and 29.3 percent, respectively.

New sector spending spurts

Ordos last year implemented an "Internet +" strategy to promote the dynamic development of its e-commerce industry, with the rapid development of online live broadcasts and the online platform economy.

From January to December, the city's retail sales of commodities above a designated size via online platforms surged 23.2 percent year-on-year, up 25.8 percentage points on the previous corresponding period.

Food, beverage sales recover

From January to December in 2021, the city's restaurant and catering industry above a designated size increased by 26.3 percent year-on-year.
