Siqinbilige, acting mayor of Ordos, Inner Mongolia autonomous region, said at a video conference Nov 5 that all-out efforts will be made to combat Africa swine fever in the area.

The acting mayor stressed that prevention and control of African swine fever was essential to the  city’s social stability. 

He urged departments at all levels of the city to be fully aware of the current difficult situation and to do their utmost in a calm and efficient manner to prevent the disease. 

Shi Yanjie, vice-mayor of the city, laid out the plans and assignments for relevant official departments. Representatives of the city’s agricultural, transport, medicine and customs authorities reported their current disease control work at the conference. 

African swine fever is a highly contagious, viral disease that affects hogs. It cannot be caught by humans or other species. 

China reported its first case of the disease in early August in northeastern Liaoning province, and later outbreaks were reported in several other provinces. 

The first case of the disease in Inner Mongolia was confirmed in Abga Banner Sept 12.
