The Seven-Star Lakes scenic site is situated in the hinterland of the Kubuqi Desert, the seventh largest desert in China, covering a total area of 8.89 square kilometers. From above, the seven lakes look like the seven stars constituting the Big Dipper, and this is where they got their name.
Constructed by the world-famous Elion Resources Group, whose chairman ––Wang Wenbiao –– won the Champions of the Earth award during the UN Environment Assembly in December; the Seven-Star Lakes scenic site displays the remarkable achievements of local people and how the lakes can be a perfect match with the desert.
The scenic area was confirmed as the permanent site of the “Kubuqi International Desert Forum” by the UN in 2011. In 2008, the Seven-Star Lakes scenic site was designated a 4A-grade scenic spot.
