On Oct 17, a series of events were carried out in Ordos to mark China's Poverty Reduction Day.
Oct 17 is also the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. To honor it, seven special job fairs were held in the city, providing 2,271 jobs with 340 of them filled by the end of the day.
Furthermore, employment service went to the countryside to visit 728 poor families and to give advice from the police to 2,057 impoverished workers. In hopes of reducing poverty through employment, government departments have been trying to build a bridge between rural workforces and employer units, create a new model of poverty alleviation.
Oct 17 has always been the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. On that day the United Nations chooses one country as the main venue to carry out different theme activities. For a consecutive seven years from 2007 to 2013, China had jointly hosted the Global Poverty Reduction and Development Forum with the United Nations in China and the United Nations Development Program. On Aug 1, 2014, the State Council finally approved the establishment of National Poverty Reduction Day, giving Oct 17 a whole new meaning.
