A tourism area based on the Genghis Khan mausoleum has been built in Ordos. It comprises various areas focused on worship culture, history, folk culture, grassland sightseeing, leisure and entertainment. It has become a noted cultural scenic area, local officials said.
The tourism area opened in October 2003 and in that year, it received about 10,000 visits. In 2004, it welcomed 60,000 visitors and in 2005, the number reached 150,000.
Since the worship ceremony for Genghis Khan became a national intangible cultural heritage item in 2006, the annual number of visits to the area has continually increased.
During the National Day holiday in 2015, the area saw 54,000 visits, ranking No 2 among tourist destinations in Inner Mongolia.
The administration committee of the area plans to build the region into a Genghis Khan worship culture protection center and a demonstration center for Ordos folk culture.
