Senior legislator calls for legislative efforts in ethnic affairs in Guangxi

Peng Qinghua, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), has called on South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region to improve its legal system in terms of ethnic affairs to provide solid support for the region to build a demonstration zone for forging a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation.

Peng made the remarks while leading a survey team of the NPC Standing Committee on a fact-finding trip in Guangxi from March 18 to 22.

During the trip, the team conducted on-site surveys in the cities of Nanning, Hechi, Baise, Chongzuo and Fangchenggang. They visited villages, residential communities, campuses, enterprises, industrial parks and border passes to gain a comprehensive understanding of Guangxi's efforts in promoting the construction of the legal system in terms of ethnic work and in reinforcing security, development and prosperity in the border area in the new era.

Peng fully acknowledged the high-quality legislative efforts of Guangxi in the field of ethnic affairs and its efforts in promoting exchanges between and integration of various ethnic groups, noting that solid progress has been made in the region's work in ethnic unity and progress.

He emphasized the need for the region to actively integrate into major national strategies, identify the convergence between Guangxi's geographical advantages and the nation's supportive policies, and continuously enhance the region's economic development capabilities in order to contribute to building a strong country and realizing national rejuvenation.

Efforts should be made to advance the common path of all ethnic groups towards socialist modernization, refine differentiated regional supportive policies, further improve infrastructure, develop distinctive industries, and accelerate high-quality development in border areas, Peng said.

He also called for reinforcing theoretical research and educational outreach to strengthen the sense of community for the Chinese nation, utilizing Guangxi's revolutionary resources to promote the spirit of patriotism and border defense, and guiding people of all ethnic groups to firmly uphold the concept of community for the Chinese nation to jointly create a better life and safeguard the country's border areas.
