As the 2024 Ningbo Open unfolds in Yinzhou district, Ningbo, the trophies for the winners and finalists have already captured the curiosity of tennis fans.
Zhao'er (Ningbo) Cultural Art Company, which has been dedicated to the preservation and innovation of lacquer craftsmanship for seven years, took three months to design and craft the trophies. The design team, led by Shao Rui, a member of the China Artists Association, aimed to use them to showcase Ningbo's deep-rooted cultural heritage and modern charm.
"We incorporated Ningbo's iconic landmarks such as Tiantong Temple, Ningbo Drum Tower, and Tianyi Pavilion into the designs. We also integrated the '堇' character, part of the Chinese character "鄞 (yin)", which is unique to Yinzhou," said Shao Rui.
The singles championship and finalist trophies are inspired by the iconic meiping, a type of Chinese vase which is traditionally used to display branches of plum blossoms. Crafted from wood, cloth, and lacquer, the trophies are adorned with intricate patterns featuring the Ningbo Museum and the scenic landscapes of Dongqian Lake. The trophies showcase the vibrant colors and delicate texture of lacquer art.
The doubles championship and finalist trophies are also crafted from wood and lacquer, inspired by the Ge kiln vases. These trophies split the symmetrical '堇' character into two halves, symbolizing the two halves of doubles tennis teams.
In addition to the trophies, the commemorative plates for the singles and doubles finals' umpires are also crafted from lacquer, featuring Tiantong Temple and Tianyi Pavilion. These plates highlight Ningbo's cultural diversity and inclusivity, with the temple's iconic ginkgo trees reflecting the city's rich historical and maritime heritage, while the elegant and serene Tianyi Pavilion symbolizes Ningbo's status as "a city of book and a gateway to the world."
