Cixi Ancient City has a history even longer than Lijiang in Yunnan province and Pingyao in Shanxi province, two of China's most renowned ancient cities.

The Temple of Confucius is the most impressive building in the ancient city south of the Yangtze River, which receives an endless stream of pilgrims.

The ancient buildings are represented by the old residence of Feng Yue, an official in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), which has been awarded the Asia Pacific Heritage Protection Prize by UNESCO.
