Jiangsu Tongchuang Modern Construction Industrial Technology Institute was established in July 2013 with registered capital of 20 million yuan ($2.85 million). It was co-funded by Nantong National High-tech Industrial Development Zone, Nantong Si Jian Construction Group, Tongzhou Construction General Contracting Group, Xinhua Construction and Jiangsu Tongzhou No 4 Construction Group.

The institute has departments such as an administrative division, a technical services division, an incubator operation division and a public services division. It has a committee of eight experts, including Liu Weiqing, former vice-president of Nanjing Tech University, Guo Zhengxing, professor of Southeast University, and Liu Jiaping, Chang Jiang Scholars Program's specially appointed professor.

It joins hands with colleges, research academies and enterprises to focus on four main functions: technical services, maker incubators, public services and talent cultivation. The institute has two bases and five research and development (R&D) centers. The five R&D centers feature new building materials, lean construction techniques, building construction technologies, intelligent building technologies and construction equipment technologies.

It has more than 20 pieces of R&D equipment, which are supported by colleges and research academies such as Southeast University, Henan University and Nanjing Tech University, fostering the operation of five R&D centers and engaging in research in the modern construction industry. The institute pays close attention to attracting projects in new building materials, intelligent building and green building. In addition, it has set up a guidance fund in the modern construction industry to facilitate the commercial application of scientific and technological achievements. It works with colleges and research academies to set up industry-university-research cooperation platforms. Moreover, it has invited third party institutions to provide inspection and testing services. Its pilot plant test base is a practical base for students of Nantong University's architectural engineering institute.

The institute has four patents for invention and 14 for utility models, has published 26 research papers, including 13 papers in core journals. It also undertakes one municipal science and technology project, and one science and technology cooperation project for Nantong National High-tech Industrial Development Zone.
