According to the Qidong ecology and environment bureau, this summer's bird survey recorded a total of 49 species, including four newly identified species.

Among the highlights is the white-rumped swift. Despite its Latin name meaning "footless bird", it does have feet, but they are specially adapted for perching and gripping rather than standing. This means that the swifts feed, drink, and even breed in flight, only landing briefly to incubate eggs and care for chicks. Over time, the species has evolved the ability to rest while flying. Their scissor-like wings produce exceptional flying capabilities, making the white-rumped swift one of the fastest birds in the world.

Qidong's rich coastal resources, supported by the Yangtze River, Yellow Sea, and East China Sea, offer a haven for various bird species. Moving forward, Qidong plans to enhance its biodiversity monitoring capabilities by leveraging advanced technologies such as AI and remote sensing. The city will continue its long-term fixed monitoring of biodiversity in key areas to further understand and protect its diverse ecosystem.
