Impressed by garbage sorting, Zhang Xuanfu, a resident in Chongchuan district, Nantong, has made around 80 table lamps out of empty wine bottles and waste plastic boxes in recent years.

The wine bottles in different shapes are used as holders for the table lamps. The lampshades are made out of waste plastic boxes fixed by iron wires. Zhang colors the lampshades with spray lacquers. He also creates some paintings or writes words on the lampshades.

Zhang once worked as an art teacher and has always been interested in art. He designs the lampshades and often chooses themes related to current events to make a series of lamps under a particular theme.

According to his wife, Zhang made several technical innovations when he worked in a glass factory in the 1960s. He once suggested the factory replace coal with gas for production, as burning coal causes pollution and the energy efficiency is low. The suggestion was accepted and promoted.

Zhang also won a municipal award for his innovative achievements in the late 1970s.

He has decided to donate all his lamps and has expressed hope that an exhibition can be held in an effort to showcase the lamps to the public and promote environmental protection and a low-carbon lifestyle.
