Chen Chun, a resident of Qidong, Nantong, Jiangsu province, donated 400 milliliters of Type O, RH-negative blood on March 5 to save a patient in critical condition at the Nantong Hospital of Chinese Medicine.

The 62-year-old patient had a uremia and was recently diagnosed with intestinal cancer. His situation was grave and he needed an operation. But due to his rare blood type, blood stored in the hospital was insufficient for an operation.

Type O, Rh-negative blood, also known as "panda blood" in China, is present in only three out of every one thousand people.

His daughter posted a message in a QQ group for people with rare blood, seeking help. Chen quickly responded and donated blood at the Nantong Blood Station.

According to the patient's family, few people have the same blood type as the patient and those who intended to donate blood were not able to come due to travel restrictions related to the outbreak of the coronavirus. They are grateful that Chen could help and her donation gives them hope.

Chen has followed blood donation news closely and has always been ready to help people in need ever since she learned that her blood type was rare. In 2019, she joined an online group for people in the city with the same blood type as her. She said she is often moved by their good deeds.
