As the novel coronavirus pneumonia outbreak rages on, intangible cultural heritage artists in Nantong are trying to lift spirits with their work.

Banyao whistling kites, paper-cuttings and dough sculptures featuring Chinese medical workers were created to pay tribute to their bravery and hard work.

Zhu Yu, who makes red-wood carvings, created an awning boat with a banner reading “stay strong China, stay strong Wuhan”.

"Boats represent courage, firm goals and plain sailing in Chinese culture. The piles of boxes represent the support from around the country," Zhu explained.

"I want to use the work to express my confidence that we will win this battle," he added.
