Rudong establishes first remote sensing system for vehicle exhaust

Updated: 2019-10-14

The first remote sensing system for vehicle exhaust in Rudong county, Nantong, a city in Jiangsu province, recently began monitoring real-time vehicle emissions.

The system consists of a host, auxiliary equipment, an industrial control computer, and a video recorder.

Remote sensing equipment set up on roads and greenbelts will monitor vehicle emissions based on optical principles.

When vehicles pass by, their exhaust will interact with light beams emitted by the equipment, and their emissions factors will be recorded through spectral changes.

The equipment will obtain data about vehicles through their license plate numbers, and the electronic screen will then showcase whether their emissions are up to standard or not.

The remote sensing technique will enhance the efficiency of emissions monitoring and help improve the environment, as vehicle exhaust has become a major cause of air pollution.

During the trial run, drivers won't be punished if their emissions exceed the legal limit, but they will be required to promptly fix the issue. When the system goes into full effect, owners will be punished if they exceed the emissions limit twice within six months.
