Rugao children take part in kite tradition

Updated: 2019-03-21

Children at a kindergarten in Jiangsu province were treated to a fun-filled kite activity to mark Spring Equinox (chunfen) on March 20, with each of the children learning how to make and fly a kite.

Wuyao Kindergarten in Rugao, a county-level city in Nantong hosted the activity to mark the start of the fourth solar term out of the 24 on the Chinese lunar calendar, with Spring Equinox falling on March 21 this year.

The Spring Equinox signals that days will have equal lengths of light and darkness, with the days starting to gradually get longer in the Northern Hemisphere.

Flying kites is a Spring Equinox tradition. In ancient times, people lacked medical information, so they wrote their health problems on paper kites, hoping that by cutting loose the kites, they would also be ridding themselves of their illnesses.

Nowadays, people tend to write messages of good luck, believing that it might bring them good fortune.
