By the end of 2019, Haimen had a permanent population of 906,000, 1,700 more than in the same period of 2018. The registered population was 993,400, 2,447 less than the previous year. The birth and mortality rates were 0.546 percent and 0.858 percent, respectively, putting the natural population growth rate at -0.312 percent.

The city is well-known as a town of science and technology, textiles, construction and longevity. It was included in the top 100 industrial counties of China in 2019 and ranked 17th among the top 100 county-level cities in terms of basic economic competitiveness and 20th among the top 100 small and medium-sized cities in terms of comprehensive competitiveness.

In 2019, Haimen achieved sustainable and stable economic growth. The regional GDP was 135.24 billion yuan ($19.06 billion), a year-on-year increase of more than 6.4 percent. The added value of the primary, secondary and tertiary industries were 6.39 billion yuan, 69.57 billion yuan and 59.28 billion yuan, respectively, up 2 percent, 7.5 percent and 5.7 percent year on year. 

The public budget revenue was 7.1 billion yuan, the same as the previous year; fixed-asset investment grew 7.4 percent; total retail sales of consumer goods rose 6.1 percent; and per capita disposable incomes of urban and rural residents grew 8.3 percent and 8.9 percent, respectively, to 51,870 yuan and 26,858 yuan.

Imports and exports were valued at 19.42 billion yuan, down 4 percent year on year. More specifically, exports decreased 5.2 percent to 16.86 billion, while imports increased 4.8 percent to 2.56 billion.
