Phil Hamilton, director-general of ASME, and Jeff Patterson, chief operating officer, met with the delegation.

Zhang said that ASME has international authority and influence in academic research in mechanical engineering and the formulation of standards and norms. While China is in rapid development, it is in urgent need of convergence with international standards in many fields. China has a huge market and there is potential for cooperation between the two sides. The Chinese government will provide a more convenient and open policy for the exchange of high-end experts and hopes that ASME can recommend more of them to cooperate with China.

Patterson said that the cooperation between the two parties accords well with ASME's commitment to train engineers to serve the development of the world and that the two parties will cooperate more in the areas of industrial manufacturing, robotics, artificial intelligence and clean energy.

Both sides participated in the preparatory meeting for the 12th Sino-US Symposium on Engineering Technology, and discussed the preparations for the sub-forums.

Zhang visited the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations and held talks with the president, Stephen Owens, whom he briefed on the exchange of personnel between China and the United States. Owens introduced the status quo of the current U.S.-China relations as well as the functions of the National Committee in U.S.-China Relations. Both parties agreed that talent exchange plays a very important role in the overall diplomatic relations between the United States and China and said they will promote mutual benefits and pragmatic cooperation.

Established in 1880, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers is an academic body with an important international influence and authority. It has 120,000 members worldwide and has the largest technical magazine publishing system in the industry. The manufacturing standards and norms set by ASME are the international benchmarks. ASME is composed of five major departments, 44 divisions and hundreds of committees in 13 regions of the world.

Founded in 1966, the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations is a private, non-partisan, and non-profit organization that aims to promote mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and China. Over the past 50 years, the committee has developed innovative projects related to the frontier issues in the relations between the United States and China. It pays close attention to issues involving international politics, national security, education, government administration and civil society, including those related to economic cooperation and media. It seeks to develop communication, public education and policy appreciation between the United States and China.
