The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau signed an agreement on Oct 25 with the administration of the Lin-gang Special Area – located in Shanghai city in East China – to construct the Asia-Pacific Typhoon Research Center there.

The facility is expected to help turn the area into a world-class innovation hub for typhoon ocean research. It is felt that this will attract top-flight research people in the field from at home and abroad – leading the development of international typhoon science program and establishing a scientific and technological system for typhoon prevention and disaster reduction in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Asia-Pacific Typhoon Research Center – established under auspices of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) – will be the only international professional typhoon research institute in the world.

In the wake of the agreement, the Lin-gang Special Area Administration will reportedly give its full support for the establishment of a new R&D institute at the Asia-pacific Typhoon Research Center – as well as for special funds for international typhoon research, offices, operations security and policies for personnel and housing.
