The Lin-gang Special Area, located in East China's Shanghai city, on Sept 22-25 held the 4th Global Conference on Aquaculture – themed on "aquaculture for food and sustainable development" – according to local media reports.
Aquaculture is the farming of aquatic organisms – including fish and shellfish – mainly for human consumption, in both coastal and inland facilities. It has been rated by some as probably the fastest growing food-producing sector.
More than 2,700 participants attended the conference. They included more than 2,200 online participants from 120 countries, regions and organizations – as well as 500 participants, including diplomatic envoys from 19 countries and institutes, who attended the proceedings on-site.
The conference reportedly comprehensively summarized the achievements of global aquaculture development over the past decade.
It analyzed the opportunities and challenges for the development of the sector and proposed the development orientations and key measures needed to be taken for the aquaculture industry in the future.
