An intelligent steel cleaning and inspection robot for offshore platforms operated by the oil and gas industry - invented by the Hadal Science and Technology Research Center at Shanghai Ocean University and China International Marine Containers Ocean Engineering Co Ltd, or CIMC - recently completed its first full-scale test.

Shanghai Ocean University, also known as SHOU - formerly the Jiangsu Provincial Fisheries School and established in 1912 - is based in East China's Shanghai city.

The test focused on the robot's functions for cleaning and inspecting the platforms in dry and wet conditions.

It checked its motion performance, cleaning efficiency and cleaning and testing capabilities under water. It acquired videos and data in the process and reportedly laid a solid foundation for further technical applications.

CIMC is the largest domestic enterprise specializing in general assembly and R&D design of deepwater offshore equipment. It boasts competitive advantages and top-flight performance in the industry and works with SHOU in various fields.

The project is the first phase of cooperation agreed between the two sides. It is expected to improve application levels for digitalization, intelligence and automation - serving the development and construction of offshore projects in China.
