A cutting-edge automatic parking system that uses automated guided vehicles, or AGVs, recently went into service in the Innovation Crystal Industrial Park in the Lin-gang Special Area in Shanghai – promising to take the pain out of parking your car once and for all.

An automated guided vehicle or automatic guided vehicle is a mobile robot that follows markers or wires in the floor, or uses vision or lasers.

The innovation is a multi-functional intelligent system that is expected to greatly improve parking efficiency and solve the parking problems of the park.

The system reportedly uses an advanced software system employs artificial intelligence algorithms at its core to complete a series of procedures, including parking, warehousing and collecting cars.

The droids of the system can perform unmanned driving and smart controls. The intelligent dispatching system based on AI technology can carry out the scheduling of 200 droids at a time, solving the problem of long-time queuing when collecting vehicles.

When parking, the driver drives the car into a preset parking platform and gets a parking ticket or scans the QR code. The system will then automatically assign a droid to carry the car to the designated parking space.

When fetching his vehicle, the driver can choose mobile payments or bankcard payments. When the payment is completed, the driver can pick up the car at the parking platform.

The process of parking and car collecting is reportedly finished within three minutes on average.

The system is also understood to provide appointment services for car collecting. The driver can inform the system to transport the car to the parking platform in advance, arriving at the platform at arranged time to collect the car.

The system is combined with multi-level parking lots, using elevators to improve space utilization. Compared with a conventional car park, it can accelerate the whole process of parking and collecting by removing troublesome procedures such as looking for parking space, parking the car, searching  for the vehicle, looking for exits and queuing up for payments.
