Yangshan Deep Water Port – located in the Lin-gang Special Area of East China's Shanghai – once again broke a record for monthly container throughput in January 2021, with year-on-year growth of 17.8 percent.

With the new high set for container handling, however, reportedly comes a new challenge for customs supervision. Yangshan Customs – administered by Shanghai Customs – is understood to be actively promoting the establishment of smart customs and has applied several scientific and technological supervision means to improve its supervision quality and efficiency.

Yangshan Customs has taken advantage of the smart supervision of the automated terminal in the Yangshan Phase IV automatic terminal and deployed a vehicle mounted container inspection system to connect with the automatic guided vehicle at the port.

The container cargo can undertake machine inspections without stopping during automatic guided vehicle transportation, with the images generated by scanning transmitted to the background program for examination.

As distinct from the sometimes complex and often troublesome regular customs examination process, the new mode of container inspections generates images through preliminary machine scanning and sends them to intelligent platforms for examination.

The personnel at the customs then examine the cargo through the images, with the help of tips and certain insights that have been provided to them. The container that passes the inspection can then enter the normal customs clearance process.

Additionally, mobile 5G intelligent video monitoring equipment has been deployed in the crew stairways and cargo handling areas for the first time, to improve the real-time monitoring capabilities for handling materials.
