Horizon (Shanghai) Artificial Intelligence Technology Co Ltd signed an agreement on Sept 16 with the Lin-gang Special Area – a new section of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone which opened last year -- to build an automobile artificial intelligence (AI) chip research and development center in the zone, according to local officials.

They said that with an investment of nearly 3 billion yuan ($444 million), Horizon plans to build a global R&D headquarters for work on AI automobile chips.

It is expected that the mass production of millions of AI chip intelligent vehicles could be achieved in the next two years.

In addition, a large number of leading people with rich industry and international experience will be gathered there to focus on the R&D and industrial implementation of vehicle intelligent driving chip.

Officials said they will effectively support AI computing such as automatic driving and cockpit human-computer interactions.
