Construction started on a cold storage inspection facility at Yangshan port in Lin-gang Special Area on April 27.

In the future, imported pork will be able to be inspected in the cold chain in order to guarantee food safety.

The project is meant to improve the efficiency of port operations and extend the port logistics industrial chain.

The cold storage facility will cost a total of 210 million yuan ($29.67 million) and have a capacity of 20,000 tons. It will also be equipped with 36 inspection gates. A trial run on the facility will carried out before the end of the year.

There is currently no integrated cold storage system in the Yangshan Comprehensive Bonded Zone, meaning imported goods to be inspected must be sent to various cold storages throughout the bonded area.

"There are five such facilities in the Yangshan port, with the farthest one being 30 kilometers away from the bonded area," said Gu Tianyi, an official in charge of the project. He added that frozen goods that need to be inspected at Yangshan port and Donghai Bridge will be directly sent to the new cold storage facility after it begins operating.
