The Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory was the largest foreign-invested manufacturing project in Shanghai in 2019.

Construction on the factory started in Lin-gang Special Area on Jan 7, 2019. The main body of the factory was completed on Sept 27, 2019.

Tesla obtained its production qualification in October and started delivering its Shanghai-made Model 3s to retailers on Dec 30, 2019.

In the first quarter of 2020, Tesla produced nearly 103,000 electric cars and delivered about 88,400 to retailers, setting a first-quarter record for the company. The factory is continuing to set new records.

The production line at the Tesla Gigafactory was seen for the first time on April 8, including its assembly workshop, painting workshop and welding workshop.
