Based on a self-developed visual perception system, a laser radar system, millimeter wave radar system, satellite and inertial navigation system, SAIC IHDT has multidimensional, multidirectional, 360-degree perception. It can accurately perceive traffic up to 250 meters in front of and behind it, and about 80 m on its left and right, accurately identify pedestrians, vehicles and other obstacles, and plan its driving route, providing safer and more reliable vehicle handling than human drivers can achieve.

With the new-generation 5G-V2X technology, SAIC IHDT can realize real-time interactive communication between vehicles in the platoon in 20 milliseconds, ensuring real-time automatic following, lane keeping, detouring, emergency braking and other platoon driving functions. In addition, to ensure safety, the distance between vehicles in the platoon is reduced from 150 m to 15 to 20 m, thereby improving the density of road traffic. It is expected to increase the capacity of East Sea Bridge by 100 percent, which is equivalent to building a new bridge.

In the container yard at Yangshan Port, satellite signals are easily blocked. However, with its high-precision map, enhanced ground positioning and visual laser sensing system, SAIC IHDT can interact with the tire cranes and bridge cranes through the V2X technology, realizing accurate positioning and one-time accurate parking within 15 seconds (±3 cm). Therefore, single point handling efficiency will be increased by 10 percent.

Thanks to the world's first "LNG+12AMT combination" clean energy power system, the emissions of NOx and PM pollutants generated during container transport by SAIC IHDT are 60 percent lower than those generated by conventional diesel-powered heavy trucks.

In addition, in terms of cyber security, which is of general public concern, SAIC IHDT Project is equipped with a full-time cyber security team. They have built a four-layer defense system from network to host, which carries out 1,107 security reinforcement measures, 193 security tests and 476 risk assessments. The project implements a hierarchical cyber security protection system in accordance with China's Cyber Security Law. It has been put on record in the Cyber Security Department of Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau. Through third-party security testing and implementing protective measures, its cyber security protection has reached a high level. This is the first intelligent vehicle project in China put on record for hierarchical cyber security protection.

Based on the IHDT Operation at Yangshan Port, SAIC Motor, SIPG and China Mobile plan to realize small-batch IHDT operations in 2020 and mass commercial operations in the next three to five years.
